Catholic Charities Family Center of Elyria

Elyria OfficeCatholic Charities Family Center of Elyria serves as the main administrative office for Catholic Charities Community Services of Lorain County (CCCS-Lorain). In addition to the administrative functions, it offers programs including family violence intervention services, teen mentoring, Help Me Grow, juvenile court partnership programs, and a variety of in-home family support services and services for older adults. Most of the programs are community-based and on a contract basis for referrals. In addition, the Catholic Charities adoption programs' Lorain County offices are located at this site.

Catholic Charities has provided services for people throughout Lorain County for more than 50 years.

Program and Services



Adoption/Foster Care

Purpose: To assist persons considering adoption or foster care.

Population Served: Birth parents who are considering an adoption plan for their child; potential adoptive parents who are approved to provide a permanent home for a child; and persons who would like to provide a temporary home for infants awaiting adoption.

Criteria: Potential adoptive parents must meet the home study guidelines of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Fees: Sliding fee scale for adoptive family; no fee for birth or foster care parents.

Major Funders: Adoptive family, Catholic Charities Annual Appeal, United Way of Lorain County

Adolescent Domestic Violence Prevention

Purpose: To provide screenings for referrals to education/prevention treatment groups or other appropriate community resources.

Population Served: Youth in residential court facilities.

Criteria: Referral from juvenile court.

Fees: None.

Major Funders: Lorain County Board of Mental Health.

Communities that Care

Purpose: A drug-free community coalition that provides a structure for organizing and educating to enhance community and reduce underage drug use.

Population Served: Families, youth, schools and the community.

Criteria: A desire to reduce drug use among youth.

Help Me Grow

Purpose: To provide services to pregnant women and children.

Population Served: Families in Lorain County with a qualifying child age 0-3

Criteria: Expectant mothers and children up to age 3

Major Funders: Families and Children’s First Council

In-Home Support Services

Purpose: To provide in-home parent mentoring services in partnership with the Lorain County Children and Family Services.

Population Served: Families with children at risk for abuse and neglect.

Criteria: Referral basis from the Lorain County Children and Family Services.

Fees: Not applicable

Major Funders: Lorain County Children and Family Services.

Older Adult Services

Purpose: To provide assessment and referral services to older adulst.

Population Served: Older adults residing in Lorain County

Criteria: None other than must be a resident of Lorain County

Fees:None

Major Funders: United Way of Lorain County

Strengthening Families

Purpose: A family skills program to increase resilience while reducing substance abuse and violence.

Population Served: Families with youth ages 6 - 17.

Criteria: Families residing in Lorain County who wish to participate in the seven-week segment.

Fees: None

Major Funders: Children's Trust Fund

Success for Youth

Purpose: To provide case management for life skills and job readiness training to court-involved juveniles.

Population Served: Youth ages 13 – 17.

Criteria: Juvenile court referral basis.

Fees: Not Applicable

Teen Mentoring

Purpose: To provide therapeutic mentoring for at-risk teens.

Population Served: At-risk teens residing in Lorain County.

Criteria: Juvenile court referral basis.

Truancy Program

Purpose: A program in partnership with juvenile court and the Lorain County School System to remedy problems contributing to truancy.

Population Served: School aged children who have excessive unexcused absences.

Criteria: Referral basis from Lorain County Juvenile Court Attendance Officers.

Catholic Charities Family Center of Lorain

Lorain Family CenterThe Lorain Family Center, known in the neighborhood as “8th Street,” offers services to help individuals and families meet their immediate basic needs. Services provided include hot meals, choice pantry, clothing/ furniture referral assistance, prescription and utility assistance, and GED instruction. It also serves as a day shelter for persons who are homeless or otherwise vulnerable.


Originally established in 1984 as St. Mary’s Hospitality Center, the center provides a place in central Lorain for persons who are homeless, hungry, or otherwise vulnerable to receive assistance. In the mid-1990’s the name of the center was changed to Catholic Charities Lorain Family Center to better reflect our work with individuals, children and families in the community

Hot Meals Program

Purpose:To provide a hot lunch Monday-Friday at 11:30 a.m. and to provide a dinner on Wednesday afternoons at 4:30 p.m.

Population Served:All members of the Lorain community.

Critera:Any member of the community is welcome to attend.

Choice Food Pantry/Emergency Food Bags

Purpose:To provide food to persons experiencing an emergency situation.

Population Served: Persons experiencing food shortages.

Criteria: Must be a resident of the City of Lorain

Fees: None

Major Funders: Second Harvest Food Bank, United Way of Lorain, The Community Foundation of Lorain County


Community Connections Day Shelter

Purpose:To provide emergency services, such as prescription, utility, clothing and furniture referral assistance.

Population Served: Homeless and vulnerable residents of Lorain County, persons in need of assistance.

Criteria: Must reside in Lorain County.

Fees: None

Major Funders: A collaboration of Lorain Metropolitan Housing, Nord Mental Health Center, Veterans Representatives, Lorain Free Clinic, Lorain County Jobs and Family Services, the Ohio Benefits Bank.
